The Buzz: Personal trainer Maria Munoz is realizing her dream at Evolve Fitness in Grand Chute

GRAND CHUTE – If you’re looking for an indoor workout alternative for when outdoor exercise becomes hampered by Wisconsin winter, a new option is available.

Evolve Fitness opened Aug. 28 at 2021 N. Casaloma Drive in Grand Chute. The fitness club is open 24 hours, seven days a week and is fully equipped with strength and cardiovascular equipment.

Owner Maria Muñoz called Evolve Fitness a “boutique gym,” which means the facility isn’t as spacious as a “big-box” chain gym such as Anytime Fitness or Planet Fitness. However, at 4,200 square feet, Evolve Fitness provides more than enough space to create a comfortable atmosphere for its members.

“I kind of cater to the community that doesn’t like a big gym,” Muñoz said. “I want to know my people and know my clientele, so it feels like a fitness family.”

The strength equipment at Evolve Fitness includes plate-loaded machines, free weights – such as dumbbells and kettle bells — and other machines. For cardio, the gym has treadmills, ellipticals, rowers and stationary bikes. The functional area includes jump ropes, battle ropes, bands and slam balls, while there are foam rollers and other mobility tools in the stretching room. Evolve Fitness also has lockers and a changing room.

“I just wanted to create a place where (my members) felt like I knew them, so that they feel comfortable going in on their own,” Muñoz said. “Even people who aren’t my clients, I want them to feel like that, too. I don’t want them to ever feel uncomfortable and like they can’t ask any questions.”

Muñoz is a Fox Cities native and has been a personal trainer since 2015. She most recently worked out of Premier Fitness, 2408 W. Nordale Drive in Grand Chute.

Muñoz is known for her “Evolve Fitness Retreats” — women-only trips where Muñoz and her clients visit a destination for a fitness-oriented vacation.

During her time at Premier and other gyms, Muñoz became passionate about helping her clients — and gym members in general.

“People would just ask me for help and I really enjoyed that,” she said. “I enjoyed giving people confidence to go on their own and do it.”

Muñoz is proud to be the sole owner of Evolve Fitness, making the club 100% women- and minority-owned. Opening her own gym had long been Muñoz’s dream, and she started pursuing the possibility in January. She said it was a challenge amid the coronavirus pandemic, but with the help of her family and clients, she was able to have the facility up and running in August.

“I have the best support system,” Muñoz said. “I couldn’t have done this without my clients and my family. They literally were here day and night for like a month and a half getting this place ready.”

Muñoz will likely keep her member base small, capping it at about 250, something that is common for boutique gyms. About 60 members have signed up so far, she said.

As a 24/7 gym, Evolve Fitness is under surveillance around the clock. Members are given key fobs that allow them to access the facility.

Muñoz hasn’t decided on staffed hours yet, but said she usually arrives at 5 a.m. and that her doors are open until 5 p.m. For those interested in enrolling as a member or receiving a tour of the facility, she recommends making an appointment. Call 920-903-9136 for more information.
